“We must help the child to act on their own, to will on their own, to think on their own. This is the art of those who aspire to serve the spirit.”

The Montessori Method

Natural development

From the very first seconds of life, the child begins to develop. He awaits stimulation and the opportunity to learn and gain new experiences, with the educator acting as a guide in their selection.

The Montessori method encourages the natural development of each person.

Natural exploration

The child naturally explores the surrounding world and plays intelligently, free to act in accordance with their innate tendencies.

The activities are designed to maximize the child’s independence, being identified and chosen by the child rather than suggested by the educator.

The Montessori Method

The ordered structure of the Montessori environment serves as the child’s primary guide to knowledge and discovery, with the Montessori educator playing a role of assistance and support in the child’s development.

The child learns to self-evaluate, which leads them on the path of self-development.

Logic games

The materials used in Montessori activities yield visible results and stimulate the children’s natural development. Children learn through play and play while learning.

Montessori materials represent the perfect synthesis of educational aids and developmental games.

The Montessori Educator

Montessori education begins with an understanding of the adult’s role in providing support or assistance to unleash the child’s existing inner developmental powers.

The Montessori approach developed out of an absence of preconceived ideas regarding how a child can best develop on their journey toward maturity.

The prepared environment

Montessori education seeks to provide the child with the ideal environment suited to each stage of development. This prepared environment, central to the Montessori experience, ensures a secure and lasting foundation upon which education is built. The environment is designed as a bridge between home and the wider world.

At Montessori School Orizonturi Libere, the educators hold international Montessori (AMI) training from Europe and the USA.

Montessori materials

All Montessori materials are genuine products from Nienhuis, Netherlands. They are designed to maximize the child’s independence: all are sized appropriately for the child.

The activities and materials are arranged in an orderly manner and are easily accessible to the children on open shelves placed at their eye level.

Mixed groups

A mixed-age environment is a key feature of Montessori education. Since children have different needs at various stages of development, classes are organized into mixed-age groupings—specifically, the age ranges of 0–3, 3–6, 6–9, 9–12, 12–15, or 15–18 years.

In the family, at work, and in society as a whole, we are in constant interaction with people who are younger or older than us.

Freedom and discipline

Each child is given the opportunity to choose activities for their individual development. A child’s interaction with the environment is most productive when freely chosen and based on their personal interest.

Each child is given the opportunity to choose their activities and the freedom to take as much time as they need. Paradoxically, this freedom leads to discipline.

Founder’s Message

I embarked on a journey called Montessori Orizonturi Libere (Montessori Free Horizons) in 2014, primarily because I am a mother. While looking for the right environment for my daughter as she was about to enter a group setting, I discovered exactly what I was seeking: a perfect alignment—a total and indisputable harmony—with the writings of Maria Montessori. At the same time, I found in Montessori education that harmony of mind, body, and soul without which a human being cannot function optimally.

I believe that we, as adults, serve as examples for our children; we bear both the responsibility and the duty to consciously guide their natural development without placing obstacles in their path, and to ensure an environment that fosters the unique potential with which every child is born. The family is the first model for life, and subsequently, the “kindergarten”—the place where our child spends a significant portion of each day—becomes a second family, a second home. What I wanted my own child to find in this second “family” or “home” is exactly what I wish for other children to find within the Montessori Orizonturi Libere family.

Together, I believe we can bring about a much-needed change in society; we can hope to help build a community that shares specific values and principles, where respect and common sense serve as our guiding lights. “The things a child sees between the ages of 0 and 6 are not merely things they will remember later; they become an integral part of their soul.” Maria Montessori’s words can serve as a motto for us all, guiding our actions and reminding us of the importance of trust, self-control, and inner peace. By providing a suitable environment—an authentic Montessori setting—we give children the chance to grow into balanced adults who find joy in what they do and fulfillment in the realm of “being.”

Welcome to Montessori Orizonturi Libere!

Curriculum

Practical life

One of the goals of this type of exercise is to help the child adapt to the environment and the times in which they live, to orient themselves, and to engage directly with their surroundings. The child learns to coordinate their movements, gains a sense of balance, develops willpower and the ability to concentrate, and learns to be independent and to take care of themselves.

Sensory area

Sensory development is just as important as physical or intellectual development. Through sensory development exercises, a child learns about the environment in which they live by using all five senses: smell, sight, touch, taste, and hearing. It is our senses that open the way to new horizons.

Mathematics

The child learns to think in an orderly, clear, and logical manner. They are free to explore at their own pace. During mathematics training, the child learns self-assessment and how to gauge their own progress. Furthermore, throughout this stage, the child learns to interact with other children, as most activities take place in a group setting.

Language development

The Montessori method introduces children to the secrets of reading and writing. The materials and methods employed ensure that the child is not required to exert effort beyond their capabilities. Sensory materials are introduced in an organized manner, allowing the child to absorb information through the five senses.

Our school was more of a home for children than a true school. We had prepared a place for the children where a diffuse culture could be absorbed from the environment, without the need for direct instruction—for those who aspire to serve the spirit.
